What Extreme Heat Does to Your AC System
It Forces Your System to Operate Outside Its Rated Efficiency
Every air conditioner carries a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating — a measure of how efficiently it converts electricity into cooling. That rating is calculated under standardized test conditions, not under a 108°F Arizona afternoon.
When outdoor temperatures exceed the conditions your system was rated for, efficiency drops. The compressor has to work harder to move refrigerant through the cycle, the condenser struggles to release heat into air that’s already extremely hot, and the system consumes more electricity to deliver the same amount of cooling. On the hottest days of a Prescott Valley summer, your AC is working significantly harder than its spec sheet suggests — and your energy bills reflect it.
It Puts the Compressor Under Sustained Stress
The compressor is the most critical — and most expensive — component in your AC system. It pressurizes the refrigerant and drives the entire cooling cycle. Under normal operating conditions, the compressor cycles on and off, giving it periodic rest between cooling cycles.
During extreme heat events, your system may run nearly continuously for hours or days at a time with little rest. That sustained operation generates heat within the compressor itself. Most compressors have thermal overload protection that will shut the unit down if internal temperatures get too high — which is why AC failures often happen on the hottest days of the year rather than average ones.
Repeated thermal stress accelerates wear on compressor windings and internal components. A compressor that might last 15 years under moderate conditions in a mild climate may have a significantly shorter service life in central Arizona — particularly without regular maintenance.
It Strains Fan Motors
Both the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser rely on fan motors to move air. The outdoor fan motor in particular operates in full sun exposure during Arizona summers, often in an equipment well or on a rooftop that absorbs additional radiant heat. Fan motor bearings degrade faster under sustained heat stress, and motor windings are more prone to failure when operating temperatures consistently run high.
A failing outdoor fan motor is one of the more common summer breakdowns we see across Prescott Valley, Camp Verde, Cottonwood, and Dewey-Humboldt — and it often happens on the hottest days precisely because that’s when the motor is under the most strain.
It Increases the Risk of Refrigerant Issues
High ambient temperatures raise the pressure throughout your refrigerant system. While a properly charged and functioning system handles this within design parameters, a system that’s already slightly low on refrigerant — or has aging components — is more vulnerable to pressure-related problems during heat events. High head pressure can trigger safety shutoffs, cause erratic operation, or accelerate wear on already-stressed components.
It Accelerates Wear on Capacitors and Contactors
Capacitors and contactors are relatively inexpensive electrical components, but they’re critical to starting and running your compressor and fan motors. Capacitors in particular are sensitive to heat — and Arizona’s summers are hard on them. A weak or failing capacitor is one of the most common causes of AC breakdowns during heat waves. Fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest things for a technician to catch and replace during a maintenance visit before it causes a full system failure.
How to Protect Your AC From Arizona’s Heat
Get Professional Maintenance Every Spring
This is the single most effective thing you can do. A pre-season maintenance visit — ideally completed before June — lets a technician inspect and address the components most vulnerable to heat stress: capacitors, contactors, refrigerant charge, coil cleanliness, and fan motor condition. Catching a weak capacitor or low refrigerant charge in April costs far less than an emergency repair call in July.

Keep the Condenser Clean and Clear
Your outdoor condenser needs to shed enormous amounts of heat on a 105°F day. If the coils are packed with dust and debris — which is common after Arizona’s haboob season — that heat transfer is compromised and the entire system runs hotter. Keep at least 2 feet of clearance around the unit and schedule a professional coil cleaning annually.
Don’t Push the Thermostat Too Low
Setting your thermostat to 68°F when it’s 108°F outside forces your system to run nearly continuously and puts sustained stress on every component. The Department of Energy recommends 78°F when you’re home as a reasonable balance between comfort and system load. Every degree lower increases energy consumption and run time meaningfully.
Using ceiling fans to create a wind-chill effect lets most people feel comfortable at a higher thermostat setting — reducing the burden on the AC without sacrificing comfort.
Reduce Indoor Heat Load
The less heat your AC has to remove, the less stress it operates under. Insulated curtains or window film on south- and west-facing windows reduce solar heat gain during Arizona’s intense afternoon sun. Running heat-generating appliances — ovens, dishwashers — during cooler morning or evening hours rather than peak afternoon heat also reduces the load your system carries during its hardest working hours.
Address Duct Leaks
